Out with the Old, In with the New: Northeast Ohio Home Renovation Part 2

year: 2023

type: residential remodel

designer: S. Flynn Design + Build

style: natural, gathered, clean, intentional

Welcome to part 2 of our #ImComingHome blog series, where we’re detailing all the updates we made to this breathtaking French country remodel. Go grab a croissant, pour yourself a cup of café au lait, and let’s get right back into it.

Just in case you need a refresher, this house has changed repeatedly since it was built 100 years ago. Before we stepped in, the house was half brick from its original build and half vinyl from a remodel 20 years ago. The previous owners passed the house onto their daughter, who wanted to give the home a complete renovation in a fresh, French country style.

We’ve already showcased the kitchen, pantry, dining room, and exterior in Part 1 of the series, which you can read here if you missed it. Today, we’re revealing the rest!

In the living room we reconfigured the entire first-floor layout, we kept the front door where it stood. It just needed an update to match the rest of the house. We also installed a beautiful, custom white oak floor that perfectly suits the soft, white walls and pretty, cream trim. Lately, we’ve seen design moving away from traditional white trim in favor of neutrals and vibrant colors for a fun twist! Here, we matched the wall and trim colors in the living room to the fireplace we refaced using the same stone as the exterior facade.

Moving toward the hobby room, we removed a wall to open up the space, but kept some of the home’s original elements, like the radiator, for a nostalgic reminder of the past. We also updated the original front door with charming arched doors that now lead to the new pantry.

Mudroom & Guest Bath

03.

The mudroom was in desperate need of a refresh. We put a rustic, white-washed herringbone brick tile on the floor, which adds so much character to the space, plus it’s enormously practical. Speaking of practicality, we added a row of mudroom lockers and a bench with loads of storage, plus plenty of room to slide shoes under the drawers. We love how the natural, character-grade oak cabinets pair with the white cabinetry, which is original to the home but with new drawer fronts. We had so much fun designing this cozy little room, from the wood slat detail on the walls to the vintage-inspired ceramic knobs on the bench drawers.

The guest bath perfectly complements the mudroom next door. We continued the slat wall treatment behind the mirror and put the same trim color on the cabinetry for consistency. For a fun flare, we installed 3 rattan sconces above the modern, frameless mirror with rounded edges that soften its look.

Primary Bath & Laundry Room

04.

20 years ago, the previous owners added a complete primary suite onto the original house. The addition provided lots of extra space in the bedroom but compromised the closet and bathroom, which were both comparatively quite small. To reallocate some space, we broke up the large bedroom to make a few distinct rooms, including a closet, a bathroom with a walk-in tile shower, and a double vanity.

We also added a laundry room, finished with blue plaid wallpaper that matches the built-in cabinet atop the primary vanity. For some contrast, we mixed patterns and textures in the laundry room by laying a hexagonal tile with a creamy linen-looking finish.

This French country home remodel brought a touch of Parisian charm to the Northeast Ohio countryside, and we’re still swooning. We hope you've enjoyed taking this journey with us and that it's inspired you to bring a little bit of the French countryside into your own home.

Considering a remodel of your own?

What we love most about this project isn’t just how it looks—it’s how it feels. Every choice was made with the family in mind. It’s a space that supports their everyday rhythm, while leaving room for pause, for gathering, and for quiet beauty.
